Panda Lumber, is a family tended business that has its historic roots dating back 10 generations. What we have accomplished has been made possible by applying old world knowledge, passed on from each generation, to continual advancement in new world manufacturing techniques.  This partnership between heritage and technology has enriched our position in the global marketplace of today. Panda Lumbers’ state of the art manufacturing facilities ensure our commitment and dedication to producing the finest Bamboo flooring available anywhere.

Although Bamboo has been a tradition in our family for more than 250 years, we will never lose sight of the fact that the history of using Bamboo, for many products, dates back 4000 years. As an example, our forefathers have been using Bamboo as a material to record history and improve our culture many years before the development of paper. Because of its’ incredible strength, Bamboo was used to build suspension bridges to cross great rivers. By using only the exterior part of the Bamboo, they created tension cables up to 394 feet long that were used to suspend the walking surface below. Panda Lumber also utilizes the plant exterior for the production of Bamboo flooring.

Bamboo is a grass and not a product derived from forestry. Because of this, it is the most environmentally sound plant, used for production of various products, in the world. Bamboo can be harvested and replenished with virtually no impact to the environment and Bamboo can be grown in soil damaged by overgrazing and poor agricultural techniques. Unlike most trees, improper harvesting does not kill the bamboo plant and that allows for the topsoil to stay in place. Additionally, because of its dense litter on the forest floor, it actually feeds the topsoil over time. This plant’s rapid growth produces a yield 25 times higher than that of timber and, with selective annual harvesting, has the capability of complete regeneration without a need to replant. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on Earth, growing 1/3 faster than the fastest growing tree. The application of this product to flooring, not only protects the environment, but also produces flooring that rivals the tensile strength of steel. The location of where Bamboo is grown also has great significance. Bamboo grown on slopes and mountains has far greater strength than Bamboo grown in valleys. The Bamboo that we harvest comes from the Yellow Mountains (Huangshan). Located in the southern part of the Anhui Province, the Yellow Mountains extend across four counties - Shexian, Yixian, Taiping and Xining and their Bamboo forests extend beyond the eyes’ ability to see. Although Bamboo for flooring can be harvested after 5 years of growth, Panda Lumber waits a full 6 years. This gives us an extra edge in achieving the ultimate structural strength for our flooring products.

Taking Bamboo from its natural state and manufacturing it into a viable floor covering is a very difficult process. The first step is to feed the harvested Bamboo into a splitting and sizing machine. The small strips that arrive at the other end of this machine are then planed down to rough-sized strips that are kiln dried to 8% - 10% moisture content. This process is the most important step and can take up to 5 days to achieve. After kiln drying, the strips are then planed down on all 4 sides. Because of the color variance, evident in all natural material, the strips are sorted by color before cutting to size. After the strips are sorted, preparation is than made for gluing and assembly. It will take an extreme application of heat and pressure for the planks to be fused together. Afterward, the assembled planks are planed again, to achieve a smooth and even surface, and then fed through machines that cut and shape the tongue and grooves. Final color is achieved by applying precise finishing techniques.

We applaud the natural environmentally friendly quality of Bamboo and feel that it is important to maintain this standard throughout the manufacturing process. It is for this reason that we have chosen to finish our Bamboo flooring using the Klumpp Coating Process. This process is recognized in our industry as a benchmark for excellence and allows Panda Lumber to use materials that compliment the natural ability of Bamboo in regard to the environment.

Klumpp has been manufacturing and developing coatings for wood and plastic surfaces since 1919 and has achieved great international stature. Experience, modern technology, quality and environmental awareness is the mantra of the Klumpp Company. Their signature lacquers do not contain any dangerous substances, preservatives or additives. In addition; they do not contain any pesticides, fungicides, formaldehyde, or asbestos. Our company had to comply with their strict guidelines to achieve certification. Chemical resistance of their coatings must be tested on 27 varieties of liquids and solids for durations of up to 16 hours in various stress groups.   It is for this reason that we are proud to say that we have achieved certification.

Panda Lumber is dedicated to furnishing the most consistent and technically produced flooring products available. Most manufacturers do not provide accessories such as reducer, ¼ “ round, t-moldings, or stair nosing. These products take more time to produce and are essential for the completion of a finished room. We make sure that our colors are consistent within production runs and mark our cartons accordingly so as not to supply different shadings.

In closing, Panda Lumber is confident that we have the finest manufactured Bamboo flooring to be found anywhere. We back this claim with the following warranty on the structure and finish of our product. Our Bamboo flooring is backed by a LIFETIME WARRANTY. This warranty is for residential application only. Our warranty for commercial application is 7 years.
